Öland Expedition 2003

Tuesday, may 20th

Dansk

Danish version
We had a late start and with approx. 3 ½ hours to the "Walther Leonhardt" we decided to do only one dive this day. For the third day the skipper managed to locate the wreck in a matter of minutes and the shot went in. The water was crystal clear. The first team did their job and finally we could kill the engines and enjoy the silence of the Baltic Sea.

The first team completed their dive and briefed the rest about the conditions on the wreck. The shot was secured next to the intact steering wheel located at the stern. Not much had changed since our visit in 2002 and though the wreck was not a dissapointment the "Walther Leonhardt" had a hard time competing with the dives on the "Nicomedia" and "Director Reppenhagen". Visibility was still good - 15+ meters or more. Everyone had some great dives and we left the wreck late in the afternoon.

On our way back we discussed if we should make a dive on "Nicomedia" but no one was really up for it. With 3 days of diving completed and 3 of the 4 wrecks done the team was quite satisfied. And with 4 days ahead no one was in a hurry. This was to be a wise decision. Only a few minutes after we had entered Grönhögen harbour the wind was blowing fiercely with a force 4 from South. It seemed that the calm weather was gone for this time.
